Go [ back in time. | up the tree. | into the future! ]

IMG_3222.JPG

Arriving in Seattle. Our adventure begins at 1st Ave S and Spokane St.

IMG_3223.JPG

After being forced to wait for the right rental truck to be sent from Tacoma, I decide to take a walk along the right-of-way.

IMG_3224.JPG

I see some chain.

IMG_3225.JPG

I pass by some sort of fabrication plant.

IMG_3226.JPG

I take a picture for Howard.

IMG_3227.JPG

I finally get the truck, then I hit that famous Seattle traffic.

IMG_3229.JPG

That's where we'll be going today.

IMG_3230.JPG

The truck makes it to Ron's house.

IMG_3231.JPG

We make it to Sedro-Woolley, to visit Chris Stern and Jules Faye, and pick up some moving equipment. That's Chris.

IMG_3232.JPG

That's Chris's Colts Armory platen press. He's working on a job for Microsquish.

IMG_3233.JPG

Leslie told me Chris is some sort of Ink God. Of course, there's more.

IMG_3234.JPG

The Kelly-B! Watching it run was really a blast.

IMG_3235.JPG

This sorts caster is green, clean, and, well, damn, did I say clean yet?

IMG_3236.JPG

Ron takes a gander at a composition caster.

IMG_3237.JPG

We take a look at some patterns and test matrices for ranging figures Chris is working on with Jim Rimmer for Futura. Did I mention that at this point, we're running hours late?

IMG_3240.JPG

We've made it to the border! What's this?! DUTY FREE!!!

IMG_3241.JPG

We headed to Vancouver to attend a Christmas party, which was hosted by a printmaker at his beautiful house. Here's some of the work from afar.

IMG_3242.JPG

Hrm. The stairway didn't come out too good.

IMG_3244.JPG

Andrea, Don, and Ron. Andrea and Don graciously opened their house to us so we wouldn't freeze in the cold! They're totally awesome. We're still at the party.

IMG_3245.JPG

So there was ham, smoked salmon, hot wings, and sushi, and sake, and wine, and punch...

IMG_3246.JPG

Um, okay. Ron and Peter Braune have surrounded this innocent couple. Peter is one reason I'm up here. I'm buying his Thompson-British Auto Platen press the next day.

IMG_3247.JPG

And I'm tired.

IMG_3248.JPG

Andrea's Vandercook 15--it's beautiful, and well oiled. She does some very nice work. This in the basement, right after we had breakfast. Oatmeal and milk-from-a-bag!

IMG_3250.JPG

Ron checks on the truck.

IMG_3252.JPG

This is the view from the warehouse where the first press is stored. Look at the snow!

IMG_3253.JPG

CPRR.

IMG_3254.JPG

Okay, that was easy enough. They had a forklift that put the press right in the back of the truck. Damn. That was easy. On to press number two! At this point, I should mention that Peter Braune of New Leaf Editions is one cool dude. One very cool dude.

IMG_3255.JPG

Too bad you can't read the label that says it was sold by the Toronto Type Foundry, Ltd.

IMG_3256.JPG

Leaving Vancouver, heading towards Tsawaassen.

IMG_3257.JPG

You can almost make out the Tsawaassen ferry terminal.

IMG_3258.JPG

Lining up...

IMG_3259.JPG

Clear and blue all around...

IMG_3260.JPG

A closer shot of the boat...

IMG_3261.JPG

In the boat!

IMG_3263.JPG

The Queen of Nanaimo!

IMG_3265.JPG

Passing by...

IMG_3267.JPG

Look how smooth the water is!

IMG_3268.JPG

Bye, bye, boat!

IMG_3271.JPG

You know, a lighthouse.

IMG_3272.JPG

Go that way, and you'll end up in Alaska.

IMG_3273.JPG

And they danced on the boat...

IMG_3274.JPG

The doors start to open!

IMG_3275.JPG

Wider!

IMG_3276.JPG

This motor goes to Steven's Thompson. It's heavy.

IMG_3277.JPG

Using the Johnson bars, we got it up on the skids...

IMG_3278.JPG

And on a pallet jack...

IMG_3279.JPG

Out to Ron, at the truck.

IMG_3280.JPG

That's where the press used to lie. Steven and Ron demonstrate the space.

IMG_3282.JPG

Back in the Ferry...

IMG_3283.JPG

We're not listing at all.

IMG_3284.JPG

The doors begin to open...

IMG_3286.JPG

Wider, and look how smooth the water is!

IMG_3287.JPG

And after Steve from Ballard Transfer moves them up to Ron's garage, there they are!

IMG_3288.JPG

Next to the neon sign.

IMG_3289.JPG

All that work done, it's time for some Kau Kau with Jamie, Bethany, and Marc.

IMG_3290.JPG

What to do, and what not to do.

IMG_3291.JPG

Melting points...

IMG_3292.JPG

Monotype Metal, part 1

IMG_3293.JPG

Monotype Metal, part 2

IMG_3294.JPG

Monotype Metal, part 3

IMG_3295.JPG

Monotype Metal, part 4

IMG_3297.JPG

Marzipan and the robot. The drive in the robot is angry. Angry dead.

IMG_3298.JPG

Marc. We're just in time for lunch.

IMG_3299.JPG

Jamie and Jeremy, walking back from Mee Sum Pastry at the Market, er, "The Place of Chinese Goodness".

IMG_3300.JPG

I-90, and bad weather.

IMG_3305.JPG

One of Paul Hunter's current woodcuts.

IMG_3307.JPG

Some of Paul's previous cuts.

IMG_3308.JPG

Look closely. You'll see the counter-rotating ink discs. Paul's very proud of them.

IMG_3309.JPG

And the mechanism beneath the ink discs.

IMG_3310.JPG

A recent addition. The counterrotating ink disc needs some work, but check out that beautiful treadle!

IMG_3311.JPG

Paul's settled on a format.

IMG_3313.JPG

Time to wait for a bus downtown.

IMG_3314.JPG

Well, it's Jeremy, and Marc's feet, with my luggage, right before I head home.
